Camping at Goose Creek State Park – Pt.1

We spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend camping with my parents in the Tar-Pamlico River basin of NC, at Goose Creek State Park. We chose this place because in spite of only being two hours away from the triangle, it was remote and not super crowded. I had charged my camera the night before but in the rush to get out the door, I forgot to load it in the car. So the photos are from my iphone and my mom’s camera.

Heading out on I-40. Even though it was a very short drive, we did stop for snacks and coffee at Farmville just to get the road trip experience. Highlight of the stop J finding Bud Cheladas. They were perfect in the hot sun when we got into the campsite

Bun was thrilled with the tents. He just wanted to go in and out and in and out and the cuteness wore off once we realized how much sand and bugs he dragged in there with him each time. However, our campsite was quite lovely, very secluded and shady. The bugs were pretty terrible but thats to be expected in a swamp.

THe favorite part of this whole trip was this boating dock that was just steps away from our campsite. I spent a majority of my time hanging out on there and Bun was in toddler heaven because he got to throw an infinite number of rocks into the water

Wading at the river beach!

These shoes went on sale right before our trip! I love them!!! Much more than Bun does

At Sunset Bun and I were the only ones hanging out at the dock and taking in the beautiful sights.  We heard pelicans and herons and there were jumping fish that would leap out of the water to catch the insects. I had no idea that fish could do that. It was amazing to take in all this beauty with my boy. It’s an hour of my life I hope to remember for ever.

Below: Selfie at Sunset and Bun and I .

We finished our night with a delicious dinner of Curried Beef, Grilled Italian sausage and wine. I wish I had pictures of our fire and food but c’est la vie.

Sickie Valentine!

This is not the Valentine’s day I had planned for. No hearts anywhere. I tried making Bun a heart shaped egg but he rejected it like he has been rejecting most food. We are sick, Bun, J and I so all three of us are spending the day indoors sniffling and bundled up and watching way too much tv

We are not going out to dinner, we are not exchanging valentine’s and I had to cancel Bun’s valentine’s day party. But its okay, because, there will be dinner this weekend and a cupcake for Bun tomorrow and many more parties to come. Because I’m lucky enough that I get much more than valentine’s and hearts from these two boys of mine. Today, and everyday.

Happy Valentine’s Day. May yours be less snot filled than ours

Dinner With the Family- A Week in My Life Friday&Saturday

So my original plan of doing Friday and Saturday separately for Adventuroo’s Week in My Life project is not going to happen. None of my pictures from Saturday is worth posting,  So I’m just going to jot down what we did on saturday at the bottom of this post. Sunday’s post is going to be skimpy too, but you’ll have to read it to know why.

Friday and Saturday were both busy days for me, it as mostly running errands, dealing with a tantrum-ing toddler and getting craft supplies busy

Friday night my parents invited us for a family dinner to celebrate Bijoya- the last day of Durga Puja. My mum cooked an elaborate dinner and we ate and ate and ate some more after we were already full

My parents have a toddler size camping chair on their deck for Bun and he loves to sit in that and look at my mum’s plants.

Bun and his Dee

For Dinner, we had Stuffed Puris- fried bread with spices and peas stuffed inside, goat meat curry, Baked Fish in a cilantro and Coconut sauce, chickpeas chilli and rice and dal

My dad found this chocolate wine and decided to open this as a dessert wine and it was interesting. I like wine and I like chocolate, but I don’t think I like them together in a bottle.

But despite the negative review all around, we still finished the bottle. Now wine is ever wasted if my family around

After dinner, Bun read some books with my dad to get the bedtime routine started. And then since it was getting late, we said goodnight to Dee and Babu and headed home.

{Discovering Durham} Fox50 Family Fun Fest

October 1st and on cue the weather turned crisp and cool.  Saturday was sunny and clear, with highs in the low 60s. J and I headed out to the Fox50  Family Fest for the annual duckie races down old bull river. Old Bull river is the canal flowing through American Tobacco Campus, one of our absolue favorite spots in Downtown Durham.

At the Family Fest Rubber Duckies are raced down our little canal to raise money for local non profits. This annual race has been going on for years but this was the first I’d heard about it so it was a brand new experience for us. really is a community affair- high school marching bands, wildlife rescue centers, alternative arts and craft supplies- these were the exhibitors and entertainment. Nothing fancy, nothing elaborate- just regular Durham families spending a day out in the autumn sunshine.

One the big attractions were the animals from Noah’s Landing Mobile Nature center. Bun adored the animals on display. He touched a baby alligator, petted a exotic wild cat from Africa, spent 20 minutes just staring at the owls. We also ran around on the grass, played with bouncy toys, drank beer, ate super garlicky fries. Cheered the bright yellow ducks as they made their way down the river.

We brought home a tired baby who went to sleep immediately. J and I had a mellow night where we sat out on our deck (mosquito free, since it was so cold) and spent all night talking. A date night and a family day all in one. A much needed break from our daily grind.

21 month Vlog

One of the most entertaining aspects of  toddlerhood is Bun’s exploding vocabulary and his enthusiasm to try out his new words. His favorite thing is now to sing along to the songs we do at story time and gymboree- Happy Birthday (from Birthday parties attended) If you are Happy and you know it and Wheels on the Bus are big favorites around these parts.

His other favorite thing is to refer to himself as “Baby Avi” but I couldn’t get it on video tonight.  I just love his sweet little baby voice and how enthusiastically he say “Hooray”

*The first 8 seconds are bit wonky because of it being exported as quicktime, but it fixes itself quickly*

{Capture the Everyday} Modern Technology

Writing this post made me realize, I have not blogged this week at all! Yikes! But I love this Meme so much hosted over at Adventuroo that I make it a point to blog on most Thursdays.

Capture the Everyday from Adventuroo

Fact 1: I have family all over the world

Fact2: I’m not a phone person

Fact3: Facebook lets me stay in touch with my peeps scattered all over the world without having to have awkward phone conversations. Clarification- the awkwardness is all on my end. See Fact 2.

Facebook has allowed me to be involved in my cousins lives and families and through Facebook they are watching Bun grow. I cannot imagine life without it. Cheers FB!

Family Day at Nasher Museum

One of the nice things of living in a college town is that we have access to a lot of cool museums. Now, I wish we also had access to a closer zoo and an aquarium but hey, with a toddler to entertain, I’m going to take what I can get.

Last Sunday J and I headed out to the Nasher Musuem of Modern Art because it was family day and admission was free and we really wanted to check out their exhibit on Vinyl Records. Also it was a gorgeous day and seemed like a great family outing. We checked out their permanent collection, the Vinyl exhibit and then we let Avi play in the bright sunny lobby and also on the museum grounds. I think playing in the lobby was Avi’s favorite part.

Bun checking out the modern section of the permanent collection. He didn’t really seem to care so much about the art, not even the big head on the wall. He was too busy checking out all the kids running around.

————————————

His favorite part of the outing- playing in the lobby, climbing the stairs and pushing his stroller around.

He was too cool to be in the pic with his mom- Also he found his shadow.
